Prof. Jan Miller of MUSE and the University of Utah will be named a TMS Fellow at the March 2022 TMS meeting. This represents an outstanding achievement within the field of metallurgy, and he will be one of only ten scientists receiving this award in 2022. Congratulations Jan!

MUSE is delighted to officially welcome Dr. Jiaoyan Li back into MUSE. She finished her postdoctoral appointment at the Idaho National Laboratory, where she worked on MUSE research efforts before moving to New York, where she has begun her professorship at SUNY-Buffalo in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department. Welcome back Jiaoyan!

Greeshma Gadikota, a leading researcher in MUSE and a professor at Cornell University, was recently interviewed for a PBS Terra episode! Using science to try to solve global environmental problems, and of course, employing research performed within EFRC-MUSE. You can watch part of the program here.

In a recent Physics Today article by David Kramer, ARPA-E's consideration of potential routes to making cleaner pure metals from ore is reviewed. The article investigates a number of important aspects of this energy-intensive industrial necessity, and closes with comments from Prof. Gadikota concerning her role as Director of Cornell Univerity's Sustainable Energy and Resource Recovery Group. Hassnain Asgar of the Gadikota research group at Cornell University has just published a short and fun article that focuses on the main objective of MUSE's research in DOE's EFRC Newsletter. For any of us who might be speaking on MUSE's mission and goals, Hassnain presents an informative look at this question of fluids in extremely confined spaces and actually manages to make the topic personal. Nicely done, Hassnain! I doubt he'd mind us using his perspective when we're speaking to various groups, but please give him credit for his intriguing analogy.

Get a team together and create a video for the 2019 EFRC Video competition!

Seeking graduate students and post-docs to do a presentation at the 2019 EFRC meeting in Washington D.C. this July.

May 13 & 14, 2019 the principle investigators, graduate students and postdocs of EFRC-MUSE will gather in Salt Lake City for our annual gathering. There will be technical presentations of continuing work and opportunities to establish further collaborative efforts toward advancing our overall research goals. An agenda and travel details coming soon.

Staff and editors from the highly regarded journal Nature will be presenting a one day workshop on the publishing process and selected elements of scientific writing on May 15, 2019 in Salt Lake City, immediately following the annual All Hands Meeting.

A new book edited by our own Pania Newell and her colleague, Anastasia Ilgen, illuminates recent work on storing carbon dioxide in deep saline formations.

Distinguished Professor, Jan D. Miller, of the EFRC-MUSE, received the prestigious International Science and Technology Cooperation Award of the People's Republic of China in Beijing on 8 January 2019.
